Emerging technology trends in 2023
Technology is ever-evolving. The world has witnessed multiple technological revolutions over past decades. Numerous upcoming technologies will change the way many industries operate in the near future. With the emergence and advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT) and more, 2023 is set to bring about several technologies that will be trending and affecting our lives.
Digital Immune System
Like our biological immune system, the digital immune system (DIS) helps mitigate business risks. The DIS ensures that user/customer experience is not compromised by protecting applications and services from crashing when they face issues, or are compromised. In other words, the digital immune system offers comprehensive virus protection to digital businesses. Given the rise of bugs, viruses and other online security threats, the DIS is amongst the top strategic technology trends of 2023. If a threat appears in the system, the DIS ensures that the system quickly recovers from failure and starts operating again in a normal state.
Developed by IBM, the DIS uses machine learning by combining various techniques such as data observability, AI-augmented testing, chaos engineering and more to grow, strengthen and adapt—similar to how our biological immune system strengthens when exposed to viruses. It is estimated that by 2025, companies that invest in this technology will experience better customer satisfaction and user experience, with a decreased downtime of up to 80%.
Ambient Computing
Ambient computing, also known as ubiquitous computing, is a concept where technology will be integrated into our everyday lives in such a way that it will be present everywhere but, at the same time—invisible. Ambient computing uses the Internet of Things (IoT), such as backdrop sensors, devices and data-collecting intelligent systems to integrate and provide users with a seamless experience. This concept is not new and has been improving and evolving over the past few years—smart homes, Apple's SIRI and Google's voice recognition in its devices are all examples of ambient computing. This technology aims to seamlessly integrate computers into our lives without using computing devices, such as keyboards and screens. Based on an individual's past behaviour, the technology will learn patterns and develop predictable solutions to facilitate everyday functions. Although the technology sounds a lot like IoT, it is different because ambient computing acts as a bridge between users and technology; essentially, it puts IoT to work.
Since technology and connectivity are everywhere, and we continue to witness their improvements, the future is bright for ambient computing. IoT and data-harnessing advances are almost parallel with ambient computing developments. Also, with tech giants like Google and Amazon working on ambient computing and AI, ambient computing's presence in many industries will soon be inevitable. Smart cities, energy, the automotive sector, and many more industries will benefit from ambient computing.
Super-apps
As we become increasingly more tech-oriented (especially the younger generation), the demand is growing for robust applications that are easy to use, and provide a good user experience. This is where super-apps come in—applications that provide an all-in-one solution which meets all the needs of the user. Super-apps include everything, from social networking to shopping, banking and much more—all under the umbrella of one application. One example of a super-app is WeChat from China. The app has over a billion users and has now become an integral part of daily life in China. Over 88% of the users of this app said that they use the app daily, and a significant amount of them spent, on average, over 4 hours per day.
Similarly, Grab, Alipay, and Gojek are all examples of super-apps that are dominating the Southeast Asian markets. Super-apps have a lot to offer to businesses as well—cost reduction, a platform for expansion, gaining revenue streams, marketing purposes, and gathering market intelligence insights are some ways companies can benefit from super-apps. Super-apps have also gained traction recently since Elon Musk announced, after he acquired Twitter, that he wants to accelerate his plans of making his 'everything app' called 'X'. It is expected that by 2027, more than 50% of the world's population will be active users of super-apps.
These are just some of the upcoming trending technologies that can be expected in the coming year; industries and businesses can be confident that these technologies will help transform, expand and offer additional sources of revenue.
